U.S. Ryder Cup— A Much Needed Distraction
Wed Sep 17, 2008 at 11:00 PM
A recent issue of GolfWorld has Paul Azinger on the cover. Paul is pretty cute. Since I rarely notice the players’ looks (mostly because I’m looking at their clubs) his face caught my attention and reminded me the Ryder Cup is around the corner.
What with the disastrous week on Wall Street, the brutal weather and the unending campaign for president, this year’s Ryder Cup is a much needed distraction. The U.S. team is an interesting mix of newbies with veterans, that with a bit of luck might actually win this year.
I get a kick out of the course name – Valhalla. It’s funny when country clubs are called names associated with pagan gods’ heavens (Olympus, Olympia, Valhalla) because playing these courses is anything but being in heaven. Maybe these names have more to do with looks than playability.
Charlie and I drove through Kentucky and played golf twice in that state 20 years ago. KY is very pretty. Not quite southern and not quite Midwest, Kentucky is its own place. Horses, tobacco, bluegrass, coal mines and golf: a real slice of America you won’t find in many states. I hope the Europeans like their visit. And I hope we win.
