Mizuno’s Irons Get Lots of Kudos

It is not surprising the publications like Midwest Golfer Magazine and Golf Digest have given the new Mizuno MP-57 and MX-950 irons very positive press.  The Cut-Muscle Technology Mizuno introduced with the MP-32 iron in 2004 has evolved in the new MP-57 iron to include a full cavity back, providing an optimum combination of playability and control.

The cut muscle design precisely positions the sweet spot height, the location of Center of Gravity (COG), and the relationship between COG and the shaft axis. These design principles are maximized to work perfectly together to deliver the most consistent iron available for today's demanding players. (Mizuno website).

"The MP-57 iron from Mizuno is a classically shaped iron that places an emphasis on shotmaking. The MP-57 features a full cavity back, that, along with Mizuno's Cut Muscle technology, increases forgiveness, distance and trajectory.  The club's modified U-grooves give golfers an ideal spin rate, while the double nickel-chrome plated finish provides the sharp look that golfers crave."

The MP-57 iron is a player’s club, but one that gives the better player more latitude on an off hit, along with the control he seeks approaching the green.

Golf Digest awarded the MP-57 its Gold Award, winning an Outstanding rating in five categories.

  • Player Comment: "These traditional clubs look great and have a syrupy feel. Anyone with an eye for pretty golf clubs will gravitate towards these..."
  • HOT: Bravo!  The MP-67 was too much of a blade to be helpful, but this club-- Mizuno's deepest full-cavity MP iron - gets it done while maintaining a player's look.  The "cut-muscle in the cavity is an innovation that we're happy to see continued.  Golf Digest

The MP-57 irons are available in both the Dynamic Gold S or R 300 (stock) or Project X shaft for a small upcharge.

Mizuno redesigned the MX-900 iron set to introduce the new MX-950 for 2008.  The new design is a big improvement in my opinion over the MX-900 model.  The 950 offers two hybrids in place of the 3-iron and 4-iron, retains the Hemi-Cog design but streamlined it to look less clunky and more classical in the rest of the set.

H.E.M.I. COG™ (High Energy Mass Impact) is design technology in all of our MX line of game improvement irons, created and utilized by Mizuno engineers to precisely position the mass throughout the club and set to maximize energy transfer from clubhead to ball for increased distance and forgiveness. This is accomplished by strategically positioning the COG and optimizing perimeter weighting for unsurpassed performance.  (Mizuno website.)

"Mizuno's MX-950 irons have drawn inspiration from their hybrid bagmates to give golfers the benefits of both hybrids and irons in one set. Mizuno's hybrids come with a high-density tungsten weight to position the CG deeper in the club. This aids greatly in both forgiveness and trajectory. Mizuno's patented HEMI COG technology greatly increases energy transfer from club to ball on all iron shots. Each club's technology transitions seamlessly from one club to another, meaning golfers will rarely be uncomfortable standing over any shot." Midwest Golfing Magazine

The MX-950 received Golf Digest’s Silver Award, with the following comments:

  • Player Comment: "If you don't like this set then you are not smarter than a fifth-grader!"
  • HOT: A great design by a company known more for its better-player irons.  It seems just right to have this pair of true hybrids followed by three hollow-back irons.  The custom fitting options that include loft choices make finding the right yardage gap between the 4-hybrid and 5-iron easier.

Interestingly, the Golf Digest editors expressed mixed feelings about the thinness of the MX-950 iron soles (5-PW).  “The sole on these irons might be a touch thin for this category.”  That redesign makes the MX-950 a much better looking club to me than its competitors.  Nike, Cleveland, Callaway and Tour Edge offer hybrid iron sets with wide soles and a clunky look that I find particularly unattractive.   I am not sure that design works for most people either, especially in the shorter irons.  However, that’s why it’s a good idea to try out the new models before you buy.

Klees Golf Shop is hosting a Mizuno Fitting Day at our shop on Saturday, March 29, where the Mizuno Midwest fitting specialist will be available to fit you for a Mizuno driver, hybrid or iron set.  Click on the link Fitting Days for more info, and get on the schedule.
